The standardization of Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) solution using Mohr’s salt is an important volumetric analysis experiment included in Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) practical chemistry for Grade 12 (HSSC-II) and is also part of the Punjab Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Practical Chemistry Book (PBA Chemistry) practical syllabus.
The aim of this experiment is to determine the exact molarity of the potassium permanganate solution by titrating it against a standard solution of Mohr’s salt (iron(II) ammonium sulfate). KMnO₄ cannot be used directly as a primary standard because it may contain impurities and its concentration can change over time. Therefore, it must first be standardized using a reliable standard solution such as Mohr’s salt.
In this redox titration, the permanganate ion (MnO₄⁻) acts as a strong oxidizing agent, while the iron(II) ions (Fe²⁺) from Mohr’s salt act as the reducing agent. The reaction is carried out in an acidic medium using dilute Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄). During the reaction, MnO₄⁻ ions are reduced to Mn²⁺, while Fe²⁺ ions are oxidized to Fe³⁺.
A special advantage of KMnO₄ titration is that it acts as a self-indicator. The solution is initially colorless, but when the titration reaches the end point, a permanent pale pink color appears due to a slight excess of KMnO₄. This color change indicates that all Fe²⁺ ions have reacted.
After standardizing the KMnO₄ solution, the experiment also involves calculating the volume of KMnO₄ required to prepare 1 dm³ of 0.01 M KMnO₄ solution using volumetric dilution. This calculation helps students understand molarity, stoichiometry, and solution preparation, which are fundamental concepts in analytical and practical chemistry.
This practical experiment helps Grade 12 chemistry students develop laboratory skills such as accurate measurement, titration technique, calculation of molarity, and preparation of standard solutions, which are essential for advanced chemistry studies.
