EXP 3 | Minor Practicals | Preparation of Pure Crystals of Copper Sulphate | PBA | Chemistry | Grade 10 | FBISE
🎯 Aim
To prepare pure crystals of copper sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O) from an impure sample by the method of crystallization.
📘 Introduction (Description)
This experiment demonstrates the preparation of pure copper sulphate crystals from an impure sample using the method of crystallization. Crystallization is an important laboratory technique used to purify solid substances. It is based on the principle that most solids are more soluble in hot solvents than in cold ones.
In this process, the impure copper sulphate is first dissolved in hot distilled water to form a solution. Insoluble impurities are removed by filtration. The clear filtrate is then heated gently to concentrate the solution. Upon slow cooling, pure crystals of copper sulphate separate out because the solubility of the salt decreases at lower temperatures.
The blue colour of copper sulphate crystals is due to the presence of water of crystallization. Each molecule of copper sulphate combines with five molecules of water to form copper sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O). These water molecules are chemically combined within the crystal structure and give the crystals their characteristic bright blue appearance.
Thus, crystallization is an effective method for obtaining pure, well-shaped crystals from an impure solid sample.
