Determination of the Value of x in (COOH)₂ · xH₂O by Volumetric Method
In this practical experiment, students determine the value of x (water of crystallization) in oxalic acid crystals (COOH)₂·xH₂O using a volumetric titration method. A solution containing 6.3 g of oxalic acid crystals per dm³ is prepared and titrated against a standard 0.1 M NaOH solution using phenolphthalein as an indicator.
During the titration process, a measured volume of oxalic acid solution is taken in a conical flask and NaOH is slowly added from a burette until the endpoint is reached, indicated by a permanent light pink color. Using the titration data and stoichiometric calculations, the molar mass of the hydrated oxalic acid is determined, which helps calculate the value of x (number of water molecules of crystallization) present in the compound.
This experiment strengthens students’ understanding of acid–base titration, molarity calculations, stoichiometry, and hydration in crystalline compounds, which are key concepts in analytical chemistry.
