On March 21, 1967, 450 American soldiers at Firebase Gold were surrounded by 2,500 Viet Cong attackers in a predawn assault that nearly overran their position. Using experimental beehive artillery rounds that fired 8,000 flechettes at point-blank range and a desperate relief column that fought four kilometers through enemy lines, the Americans killed 647 Viet Cong while suffering 36 killed in one of the most intense three-hour firefights of the Vietnam War
