In October 1969, 21-year-old Green Beret Captain William Albracht took command of Firebase Kate with just 27 Americans and 156 Montagnard fighters, only to be immediately besieged by 6,000 North Vietnamese soldiers who surrounded the hilltop outpost for five brutal days. After calling in a danger-close B-52 strike that dropped 90 tons of bombs just meters from his own positions and running out of ammunition and water, Albracht led the most audacious nighttime escape of the Vietnam War evacuating 150 men through enemy lines in complete darkness.
