October 17, 1967. The Black Lions walked into hell. LTC Terry Allen Jr. led 140 Americans of the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment straight into an ambush by 1,400 NVA soldiers. In 20 minutes, 64 were dead, 75 wounded. The battalion commander, his entire command group, and Company A were annihilated. This was Vietnam's deadliest intelligence failure and the government covered it up for 25 years. 2LT Harold Durham earned the Medal of Honor calling artillery on his own position while dying. 1LT Clark Welch was wounded 5 times but kept fighting. The truth didn't emerge until 2002. This is the Battle of Ong Thanh.
