On New Year's Day 1968, during a supposed ceasefire, thousands of North Vietnamese soldiers attacked Fire Support Base Burt where 450 Americans including 19-year-old Private Oliver Stone fought for five hours in darkness, firing artillery horizontally at attacking waves until 400 enemy bodies piled around their positions and bulldozers pushed corpses into mass graves at dawn. Twenty years later, Oliver Stone recreated that night as the final battle in Platoon, making Firebase Burt one of the most famous Vietnam battles ever filmed even though 23 Americans died there and most viewers never knew it was real.
