"I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever."
(From Chapter 23 of Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro)

Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 novel Never Let Me Go tells the story of Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth. Raised in the mysterious Hailsham boarding school in England and almost completely cut off from the outside world, the three learn their predetermined purpose: they are organ donors and will die young as a result.
Once they are 16, the three move into the Cottages, where they meet people from outside of Hailsham for the first time. As they engage in their first relationships, they hear whispers that they are actually clones, and that they may be able to postpone their organ donations if they can prove that they are truly in love. As Ruth and Tommy begin their first donations and begin to fade, Kathy becomes a carer and must navigate her fragile existence, what it means to be human, memory, loneliness, love, and loss.
This piece was written using synths and virtual instruments from @spitfireaudiollp and @NativeInstruments.
