"Literary criticism is not your forte, my dear fellow. Don’t try it. You should leave that to people who haven’t been at a University. They do it so well in the daily papers. What you really are is a Bunburyist. I was quite right in saying you were a Bunburyist. You are one of the most advanced Bunburyists I know."
(From Act I of The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde)
Written by Oscar Wilde in 1894, The Importance of Being Earnest tells the story of Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, two gentlemen who (ironically) take up the name of "Earnest" to play out double lives in the city and the countryside. Their problems truly begin when they fall in love. Gwendolen (Jack's love interest and Algernon's cousin) and Cecily (Algernon's love interest and Jack's ward) both know their lovers as "Earnest", and amusingly, both feel as if they were destined to love someone with the name of Earnest. As all four become aware of the deceptions, the play descends into a game of one-upmanship: who can outwit who the longest? Can the men win back the favours of Gwendolen and Cecily? And can the mystery of a baby left in a hand-bag at Victoria Station finally be solved?
Full of memorable scenes, flamboyant characters, and Oscar Wilde's wit and critique of contemporary society, The Importance of Bring Earnest is one of my favourite plays of all time. Tragically, though, it was also the final play Oscar Wilde would ever write; less than a year after the play was written and first performed, Wilde was cruelly arrested, tried, and imprisoned for homosexuality. In his final years spent in exile, he would pen just one more work, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol".
