"My name is Tracker. Once I had a name, but have long forgotten it."
(From Chapter 1 of Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James)
Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James is the first novel in a fantasy trilogy inspired by a diverse array of African mythologies. The novel is narrated by Tracker - a foul-mouthed, cynical young man with a wolf's eye, a protection spell from a magical Sangoma/anti-witch, and a unique sense of smell which allows him to pursue anyone, anywhere. At the novel's opening, Tracker is imprisoned and tells an Inquisitor of his travels across the North and South Kingdoms, his violent confrontations with men and monsters, and his work as a bounty hunter tracking missing people. In one such tale, he makes a fateful friendship when he meets Leopard, a shapeshifter who can morph at will between man and leopard form.
Years later, Tracker meets Leopard again when the two of them are hired to join a mission to rescue a lost boy, the key to the future of the North Kingdom. Among their company are the mysterious "Moon Witch" Sogolon, the giant Sadogo, the river spirit Bunshi, Tracker's ex-lover Nyka, and others. Fractured, argumentative, and indecisive, the group set out on their hunt for the boy, journeying through time-bending forests, gravity-defiant cities, and the magical "nine and ten doors" - portals across the Kingdom. As their journey advances, they begin to unravel a sinister plot orchestrated by the "Spider King" Kwash Dara and his terrifying sorcerer-advisor, the Aesi.
This novel was one of the most interesting, intricate, and challenging works of fantasy fiction I've read. The world that Marlon James has created is vast and magical, but also incredibly detailed and grounded. Weaving through time, place, and memory, the book is also disorienting, continually forcing you second guess events, motives, and dialogue - partly thanks to Tracker's regular reminders that many of the characters, including himself, are either lying, distorting the truth, or withholding information. I wanted this piece of music to reflect this disorienting structure of the book, as well as the journey the characters undertake, Tracker's abrasive personality, and the Aesi's web hidden beneath the surface.
This piece was written using sample libraries from @spitfireaudiollp, @EWQLTutorials, and @Orchestral-Tools.
