My entire intention for these videos is to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.


Teaching Notes:

Connecting the ½” Horizontal Lines in the center of the abstract shape takes some patience and a longer ruler or 18” straight edge of some kind. Here we’re lining up the left and right top marks first. Once we have both on the ruler, we need to look at where the abstract shape is. If the ruler goes through the abstract shape at all, that’s where we’re tracing the horizontal line against the ruler. If the edge of the “ripped paper” overlaps this shape at all, stop. Don’t draw over the exterior of the shape.


As you complete the line, move the ruler down to find the next measurement marks. Make sure you have both in a straight line, and don't forget to move the other side of the ruler. This does happen… to almost everyone. Once you have your straight line, trace the straight edge in that location. Repeat until the interior of the shape is completely filled from top to bottom with ½” spaced, horizontal lines.

Variations can be made based on material you’d like to use. Remember that if you use popsicle sticks as a wall, you may need to skip this step. Any additional changes to the brick sizes will decide the space we’re working with and since graffiti pieces are bigger than tags, the project shown is to have a medium size brick.

Note about music over audio instructions:

Until I have a quiet space to record directions, I will be avoiding adding them.

Life happens at my house. It’s loud and alive, silly and spontaneous… During nearly all of my videos, ambient sounds are not the only ones recorded.
