My entire intention for these videos is to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.


Teaching Notes:

Shade the Bricks

Everyone has their method for shading. For this project and for time constraints, I’m sharing the quickest process for this because I have found that students do not like to be meticulous here. And, honestly, I understand this. Especially when most will not want to go back to add in the darker value in the next video after spending all their patience shading each brick separately.

For this, remember where your light is. Also remember how a brick wall interacts with light and exactly how flat they actually are. This will help you distribute your light clearly.

If your light is coming in from the center, you may have more of a flat shading application. If your light is coming from a different direction, like mine in the corner, there will be simpler indications of thrown shadows.

Also, consider the time of day. If there isn’t a lot of light hitting your surface, you may find that darker bricks are more your scene. Just remember to apply similar shades to your wall.

Shading is not meant to be colored in one flat section. Note that some students will shade in a multidirectional motion which means that they don’t realize the bricks as individual objects but as a space that needs to be “colored in”.

I found that the method I’m showing in this video helps them realize this entirely and encourages their efforts to actually find the shape.

Variations can be made based on material you’d like to use. Remember that if you use popsicle sticks as a wall, you may need to skip this step.

Shading is dependent on the light source. For the class’s sake, especially if this is something they’re doing for the first time, it may be a good idea to have them all focus on shading with the same light source. I do have some students that like the idea of experimenting and that’s fine, so long as they understand what they’re doing before they put it on their artwork.

Note about music over audio instructions:

Until I have a quiet space to record directions, I will be avoiding adding them.

Life happens at my house. It’s loud and alive, silly and spontaneous… During nearly all of my videos, ambient sounds are not the only ones recorded.
