Research Video: Huichol Beading with Translucent Glass Beads

My entire intention for these videos is to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.


Research Notes:

Again, this is a research video where I'm the beginner, I’m recording my experiences for the first time trying out similar materials to omit overhead costs while learning a new skill.

Beading is something I’m very interested in and have been since I was a kid. I’ve only really gotten into trying new beading techniques as of last year which I can put up in other posts.

I found Huichol beading art during another, very unrelated research session on Pinterest and have been hooked since. I’ve done my homework, watched videos, and tried similar methods that a beginner such as myself can work around… however, I was met with some frustration which was expected.

Unfortunately, I didn’t think to record the beginning of this project as I was more interested in just starting instead of documenting progress. Research helped me find Angeline Duran, a Huichol bead artist, who designs her work on a decorative egg:    • How To Huichol Bead Egg | AngelineDuran.com  . Since then, I’ve been collecting items to experiment with.

This is the first try of many. Of course, while expecting to teach myself, I am coming up with ways to help my students understand it as well. I do like that the beeswax acts like an adhesive. I think that is a cool concept to teach my students that even if they don’t have glue, they can still work with other mediums to get their art to come together.

In upcoming videos, I’m going to be using other types of beads to hopefully be a positive experience for those who may have difficulties with their fine motor skills or younger audiences as well.

Until then, keep allowing yourself to be a beginner.
