General Note:
My entire intention for these videos is to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.
Teaching Notes:
Blend Using A Tissue
This video goes over just how easy it is to blend your graphite with a small, balled up piece of tissue paper. Actual tissue paper though. If you’re looking to use gift wrapping tissue paper, you may be in for a frustrating half blend.
In class we used variations of Q-Tips/ Cotton swabs to do the blending. We did find that it was harder to use the ones with less of the cotton wrapped around the head, however, they did stay intact a lot longer than the Q-Tips. I would have used the Q-Tips for this video but after a solid search in each bathroom at my house, I found that I didn’t have any.
Blending with a small piece of facial tissue (realized the right words here), helped tenfold and drastically reduced the work time for this step. If you’re looking to use the tissue for blending, make sure that you’re only applying light pressure. Overdoing it with the pressure can negatively impact your measurements and blur or even erase them. So light pressure is really the way to go on this one.

Variations can be made based on material you’d like to use. Remember that if you use popsicle sticks as a wall, you may need to skip this step.
Blending is something we work on for layering the shading. Typically, multiple trials of shading and blending an area to get it just right. For this work, we're doing one and building with line definition in the next video. If this is the artist's first time, stick with one as they are still very new to the concept and overwhelming them is not the best idea.
For more advanced artists, I'd extend the idea once more where they can go back into their work, add another layer of shading for a deeper value depending on the time of day and light source. Blend once more, just for detail though so you may need to get a blending stump for that or twist your tissue paper around something like the tip of an empty mechanical pencil.

Note about music over audio instructions:
Until I have a quiet space to record directions, I will be avoiding adding them.
Life happens at my house. It’s loud and alive, silly and spontaneous… During nearly all of my videos, ambient sounds are not the only ones recorded.
