There are many different types of foam rollers out there. In this video I use a 3ft long black standard and a black TriggerPoint foam roller (both are quite flat). Black colored rollers tend to be the firmest, and tend to work well for those with decent sized muscle bellies that can tolerate a bit more pressure. For those new to rolling or with less muscle or body mass, there's no shame in using a softer roller (which tend to come in a variety of other colors depending on the brand. White rollers are generally about the softest).
If you're older or have a condition that has weakened your bones such as osteopenia or osteoporosis, check with your orthopedist first to make sure you can tolerate the pressure of foam rolling. Many of you will also see rollers with more jagged knobs and bumps, such as the Rumble Roller, and others that resemble Medieval torture devices. I've tried them, and concluded that just because you can doesn't always mean you should. Most are unnecessarily uncomfortable and do not offer much added benefit beyond a flat roller.
