Stuffed Capsicum Curry – North Karnataka Style)
🧾 Ingredients
🥣 For the masala stuffing:
8–10 small Capsicum, lightly slit in half and remove seeds (Spicy one's.(Oil roast on medium flames until capsicum softness)
dry roast all the ingredients:
2 tbsp roasted peanuts
1tsp coriander seeds,1 inch cinnamon and 1 tsp jeera dry roast
2 tbsp dry coconut (kopparige / copra) or grated fresh coconut
1½ tbsp sesame seeds (til / ellu)
1½ tbsp roasted peanuts (shenga)
1½ tbsp Niger seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 small piece tamarind
½ tsp jaggery
Salt to taste
🌿 For tempering:
2 tbsp oil (preferably groundnut oil)
½ tsp mustard seeds
A few curry leaves
1 onion, finely chopped
Garlic cloves (6-8)
1 tomato, finely copped
½ tsp turmeric powder
1½ cup water (adjust consistency)
🔪 Preparation Steps
Step 1: pan fry capsicum until softness and reduces the spiciness of the capsicum.
Step 2: Make the Masala
a.1tsp coriander seeds,1 inch cinnamon and 1 tsp jeera dry roast
b.Dry roast peanuts, sesame(optional), chana dal,Garlic cloves (6-8) coriander seeds, and cumin seeds till fragrant.
Allow to cool.
Grind them with coconut, tamarind, jaggery, fresh coriander and salt into a thick, coarse paste (no water or very little).
Step 3: Stuff the Capsicum with masala
Gently stuff each capsicum with the prepared masala.
Keep the remaining masala aside for the gravy.
Step 4: Cook the Curry
Heat oil in a deep pan or kadai.
Add mustard seeds, let them splutter.
Add curry leaves and chopped onion. Sauté till golden.
Add turmeric powder.
Place stuffed Capsicums gently into the pan.
Add the remaining masala and around 1½ cups of water.
Cover and cook on low flame for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally until capsicum are soft and the gravy thickens.
Step 5: Serve
Serve hot with:
🌾 Jolada Rotti (Jowar roti)
🍚 Steamed rice
🫓 Akki rotti or chapati
💡 Tips
Always use small tender capsicum — they cook faster and absorb flavors.
You can add a spoon of curd or lemon juice for tanginess.
