Experiment 2: Identification of Metal Ions by Flame Test
🔬 Description
The flame test is a qualitative analytical technique used to identify certain metal ions based on the colour they produce when heated in a flame. When a metal salt is introduced into a non-luminous Bunsen burner flame, the heat energy excites the electrons of the metal ions. These electrons absorb energy and move to higher energy levels (excited state). Since this excited state is unstable, the electrons quickly return to their original lower energy levels (ground state).
During this return, energy is released in the form of visible light. The wavelength of this emitted light is specific to each metal ion, which results in a characteristic flame colour. This distinct colour helps in the identification of the metal present in the salt.
In this experiment, sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), copper (Cu²⁺), and barium (Ba²⁺) ions are identified by observing their characteristic flame colours. Concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used to clean the nichrome wire loop and to convert salts into their volatile chlorides, which produce clearer and more intense flame colours.
The flame test is a quick, simple, and effective method for the preliminary identification of metal ions in laboratory analysis.
