It is October 6th. Today is Goth Country Tuesday. Today's album is How I Loved You by The Angels of Light.
The Angels of Light is a alt-country band fronted by Swans's Michael Gira. The lineup for this album consisted of Michael Gira providing vocals and on guitar, Christoph Hahn on the lap steel guitar, Dana Schechter on bass guitar, piano, and melodica, Lawrence Mullins on drums, vibraphone, timpani, organ, sleigh bells, tambourine, castanets, and glockenspiel, Birgit-Cassis Staudt on accordion, melodica, and keys, and Thor Harris on the hammered dulcimer. Quiet an arrangement of players!
The tracks on How I Loved You are very melodic, and range from very uplifting to very degrading. The acoustic tracks can be tender and loving, or they can be intense and soul crushing. I think Thom Jurek writing for AllMusic described it best: "Each song moves into progressively more stirring, beautiful, and terrible territory, where no boundaries exist, the line between love and violence never was, and the only thing that matters is exposing how deep the wound goes."
