Happy October 30! Only one day left til Halloween. It is Horrorcore Origins Friday, and today's album is Da Devil's Playground by Koopsta Knicca.
Koopsta Knicca was a member of 3 6 Mafia from 94 to 2000. Koopsta left the group after his incarceration broke Three Six's contract with Sony.
When I originally thought up this year's October listen along, this was one of the first albums I knew I was gonna include. Da Devil's playground, from its artwork, to its lyrics, to its songtitles, to its production, bleeds horror. Da Devil's Playground was originally recorded in 1994, and then 3 6 grew, so the group cleaned up this mixtape, rebranded it, and rereleased it. Da Devil's Playground is a mark of the end of the underground, Horrorcore Memphis era. After this release, 3 6 Mafia became more of a crunk group, akin to rappers like Lil Jon. This album is the perfect choice to conclude our Friday's albums. It holds the same production themes we've heard every Friday, but is unique in that it's been cleaned with a remaster.
