The Club Intramuros Golf Course is finally open as green space for the public to enjoy after it was closed during the 1930s for the exclusive use of golfers.
When the Walled City (Intramuros) was built from 1571, the moat, which connected to the Pasig River, was a crucial Spanish-era water defense system.
It served to protect the walled city from invaders but became a health hazard, leading to its conversion.
The moat was a wide, water-filled defensive barrier, part of the castle-fortress design, making Intramuros an island and formidable stronghold.
During the American colonial period, stagnant water in the moat bred mosquitoes carrying dengue and malaria, prompting the government to fill it in around 1905.
After being filled, the area became gardens, playfields (for baseball/football), and eventually the Club Intramuros Golf Course, established in the 1930s.
Starting on November 23, Sundays at Club Intramuros Golf Course is dedicated to community recreation, transforming into an open park for relaxing outdoor activities.
Golf activities takes a break at CIGC every Sunday, and CIGC opens its greens as a recreational space for community use from 6 AM to 6 PM. Meanwhile, the regular golf activities continue on weekdays and Saturdays.
We took the opportunity last December 7, 2025, during the Grand Intramuros Grand Procession, to make a nostalgic visit to this historic place, which is finally open to the public, even though only every Sunday.
