Jeff discusses the very early history of the Oahu Railway and Land Company, beginning in September 1888, when the OR&L received its charter from the Kingdom of Hawaii. By December 1888, the initial route survey had begun, and construction followed shortly thereafter. By early 1889, track materials including 900 tons of rail from Germany, locomotives, and rolling stock for both freight and passenger service had been ordered. Jeff also tells the somewhat humorous story of the very first train operated by the OR&L, pulled by a Baldwin 0-4-0 locomotive, Kauila #6, on September 5, 1889. Kauila #6 is now part of the Hawaiian Railway Society collection, displayed at the HRS rail yard in Ewa. Jeff concludes with a discussion of the OR&L’s westward expansion from Honolulu to Moanalua, Pearl City, Ewa, and eventually to the end of the line at Kahuku in 1898.
