I Had to Drag My Wife Away From Penang 🇲🇾

Описание: Penang Malaysia travel guide, living in Penang, cost of living Penang, and what it’s really like to explore Penang as a couple — this trip surprised us more than we expected.

In this episode of GenXplorers, we spend time exploring one of Malaysia’s most fascinating islands and quickly discover why so many people talk about living in Penang or even retiring here. What started as a short visit turned into something much more interesting. Somewhere along the way we realised Penang isn’t just a great place to travel… it might actually be a place you could live.

Our journey begins wandering through a lively night market in Tanjung Tokong, surrounded by street food, bright lights and the buzz of local life. The next morning we walk along the beach before diving deeper into Penang’s food scene with delicious Nyonya cuisine, local street food, and some of the best flavours we’ve experienced in Malaysia.

Because we’re always curious about what everyday life would feel like somewhere new, we also do something we normally do when staying longer in a place — we buy groceries and check local prices. It’s a simple way to understand the cost of living in Penang, and honestly the prices surprised us.

Exploring Penang by scooter quickly becomes one of the best ways to see the island. From coastal roads and fishing harbours to unexpected encounters with wildlife, every turn reveals something new. One moment we’re watching monkeys at the port, the next we’re riding up into the hills for some incredible views.

One of the highlights of the trip is visiting Penang Hill and walking through The Habitat, a beautiful forest reserve high above the island. The climb up the funicular railway and the views from the top give a completely different perspective of Penang — jungle, ocean and city all meeting in one place.

We also visit the famous Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia, home to thousands of Buddha statues and the impressive Goddess of Mercy statue overlooking the island.

But what really made Penang special wasn’t just the sights — it was the people and the atmosphere. From chatting with locals about the upcoming Thaipusam festival, to enjoying incredible Indian food and street snacks in Little India, the island’s mix of cultures is something you feel everywhere you go.

The night ends in the most unexpected way when locals and travellers gather together singing Waltzing Matilda and Country Roads, a moment that perfectly captured the welcoming community spirit of Penang.

By the end of our time here we realised something surprising — Penang had started to feel a little like home. In fact, I literally had to drag Di away from Penang.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to travel Penang, live in Penang, or retire in Malaysia, this video will give you a real taste of the island.

Thanks for watching and following our adventures with GenXplorers — because adventure never gets old.
