Thaipusam in Penang, Malaysia is one of the most intense Hindu festivals in the world, and in this complete guide to Thaipusam we experience the incredible rituals, coconut smashing, golden chariot procession, piercing ceremonies and the sacred climb to the hilltop temple.
Each year hundred's of thousands of devotees and visitors gather in Penang for Thaipusam, a powerful religious festival dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. The celebration is famous for its dramatic rituals, colourful processions and acts of devotion that take place across the streets of Penang as pilgrims make their way to the hill temple.
In this episode we set out on our scooter through the streets of Penang searching for the famous golden chariot of Murugan, which leads the Thaipusam procession. Along the way we stumble upon one of the most fascinating parts of the festival — massive piles of coconuts being smashed across the road as offerings. The sound of coconuts cracking echoes through the streets as devotees break them in devotion and celebration.
We join the crowd and watch as thousands of coconuts are smashed on the road in front of the approaching chariot. It’s an incredible moment that shows the energy and excitement surrounding Thaipusam in Penang.
The next morning we witness the preparation of devotees before the pilgrimage begins. Some enter a trance-like state while helpers carefully prepare their kavadi structures and ceremonial piercings. Small hooks are gently pierced into the skin, while others have skewers placed through their cheeks as part of a vow made to Lord Murugan.
Seeing the devotion and focus of these pilgrims is unforgettable. Many will walk several kilometres carrying heavy kavadi structures or pulling hooks attached to their backs as part of their spiritual journey.
As the procession continues, we walk alongside the devotees as they begin the long journey toward the temple. The atmosphere is electric with music, chanting and thousands of people moving together through the streets of Penang.
Eventually the pilgrimage reaches the famous Waterfall Hill Temple, where devotees climb the long staircase to complete their offering. We join the climb ourselves, carrying bottles of milk as offerings for the temple.
Inside the temple, devotees pour milk over the statue of Murugan as part of the final ritual, while others have their piercings removed after completing their vows. Many pilgrims also shave their heads as a sign of devotion and gratitude.
Experiencing Thaipusam in Penang gave us a deeper understanding of a festival that is often misunderstood. What may look shocking at first is ultimately about faith, endurance and community.
If you’re planning to visit Penang during Thaipusam or want to understand how this incredible festival unfolds, this video shows the full experience — from the coconut smashing and chariot arrival to the piercing rituals and the final climb to the temple.
"It was an honor to witness the incredible Vetrivel spirit in Penang. The Annadhanam (free food) was delicious, and seeing the Kavadi carriers reach the Waterfall Hill Temple was truly moving. This is a beautiful look at Tamil culture in Malaysia."
