As a child, I struggled with my weight after immigrating from England to the United States. The colorful cereal boxes and fast food culture were a shock compared to the nourishing foods I had known before. But every summer, visiting my relatives in the Caribbean, I saw elders living well into their 80s and 90s (and beyond) — strong, vibrant, and thriving on fresh, homegrown foods and daily movement.
Now, as a physician and proud daughter of Caribbean immigrants, I’ve treated thousands of patients and worked inside the health care system. I’ve seen how often our communities are told we have “bad genes,” that illness like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes is inevitable, and that pharmaceuticals are the only answer. But what I witnessed growing up tells a different story. Our food, our culture, and our history hold powerful tools for healing.
