Most Christians have been taught that repentance means feeling sorry for sin or committing to better moral behavior. While Scripture takes sin seriously, it frames repentance far more deeply. From Genesis through the New Testament, repentance is not primarily about emotional remorse or self-improvement—it is about turning. In the Old Testament, repentance (shub) means turning away from false gods and corrupt rulers and returning to Yahweh as the rightful King. The New Testament does not abandon this vision; it intensifies it. Repentance becomes allegiance to Jesus the Messiah, the incarnate ruler through whom God is reclaiming the nations from hostile powers. Moral transformation matters deeply, but it follows allegiance rather than creating it. This article explores repentance as loyalty transfer, explains what sins we are actually repenting from, and shows why the Holy Spirit is the mark of belonging to the true King.
