Jude 7 contains one of the most overlooked and misunderstood phrases in the New Testament: “they went after strange flesh.” For generations, this line has been flattened into a general condemnation of sexual immorality, often reduced to a single modern debate. But Jude was not writing a culture-war footnote. He was invoking an ancient, apocalyptic framework shared by Second Temple Judaism and the early church—one that understood Sodom’s sin not merely as moral failure, but as a catastrophic violation of created boundaries between heaven and earth. When Jude is read in context, “strange flesh” does not mean socially deviant desire; it means non-human flesh. This article reexamines Jude 7 through its biblical, linguistic, and theological context, arguing that the destruction of Sodom and the surrounding cities is presented as a judgment against cosmic boundary rebellion—an echo of Genesis 6 and a warning to the church about what happens when God’s created order is treated as negotiable.
