Many Christians assume the Old Testament is largely silent about the identity of Jesus, functioning mainly as a backdrop of moral lessons and scattered messianic predictions. High Christology—the claim that Jesus shares the identity of Israel’s God—is therefore often treated as a later theological development rather than something rooted in Israel’s Scriptures themselves. This article challenges that assumption. By examining the Old Testament’s own theological grammar—its portrayal of YHWH’s embodied presence, divine agency, heavenly councils, and supernatural administration of the nations—this study argues that the New Testament’s claims about Jesus did not emerge in a vacuum. Instead, Jesus is presented as the incarnate resolution of patterns already embedded in the biblical story. High Christology was not imported into Scripture; it was drawn forward from it.
