I arrive in Kaohsiung and make my way through the massive Kaohsiung Station, immediately struck by its size and modern design. The station feels more like an airport than a train stop, setting the tone for Taiwan’s southern port city.

After exiting the station, I walk along the main road toward my hostel. The streets are wide and organized, with clearly marked lanes for bikes, cars, and buses, noticeably more spacious than Taipei. In the distance, I spot the iconic 85 Sky Tower, once the tallest building in Taiwan and still one of the city’s defining landmarks.

Along the way, I even come across something unexpected, a taco stand. Not exactly what you expect in southern Taiwan.

As dusk sets in, I head to Liuhe Night Market. It’s still relatively quiet early in the evening, giving me space to explore the food stalls and surrounding neighborhood before the late-night crowds arrive.

Kaohsiung developed rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Taiwan’s major port city. During the Japanese colonial period, the harbor was expanded significantly, transforming it into an industrial and shipping hub. Today, the city blends wide boulevards, modern transit, and traditional night market culture.
