In this practice we will explore the element of Earth.

On a physical level Earth correspondences to the stomach and spleen meridians and relates to our sense of being at home within ourselves.

When did you last stop and evaluate what the centre of your Earth was?

The places, people and sensations that most ground you, that most nourish your body and soul?

When did you last feel connected to the element of the Earth?

YOU WILL NEED:
2 x blocks or alternatively a stack of books
1 x bolster / pillow / cushion

Always move within your bodies capacity, honouring where you're at and tuning into what you need. Remember yoga is not just about the shapes we can make with our body, but what we learn through the experience of movement and how we choose to honour and show up fully for ourselves. 🙏🏼

🟣 WHAT IS YIN YOGA? 🟣

Yin yoga is a slow, steady, and often stationary practice, with a sense of core softness and surrender. Based on ancient Chinese philosophies and Taoist principles which believe there are pathways (meridians) of Qi (energy) that run through our bodies, yin helps support our organ health, longevity and overall vitality.

By stretching and deepening into poses, we’re opening up any blockages and allowing energy to flow freely. Poses during a yin sequence are long held and work to create healthy strain on connective tissues and fascia in the body. Unlike restorative yoga, yin can feel uncomfortable but should not cross into pain. A practice that invites you to explore your comfort zone.

You can expect to hold poses from 3 - 5 minutes. The three minute mark is when the poses becoming challenging for most people and the benefits of the practice start to occur. Shifting towards five minutes can intensify the experience and can be a wonderful training grounding for cultivating a broader capacity to stay with unpleasant sensations (as long as it does not feel risky). This practice offers a different challenge to our traditional yang style yoga (such as vinyasa, power, hatha, ect) but the benefits are just as rewarding and are a complement to our often fast paced yang lifestyles.


🔵 THREE MAIN ELEMENTS OF A YIN PRACTICE 🔵

1. EXPLORE YOUR EDGE - Come into the chosen shape at an appropriate edge, in a nonaggressive and sensitive way. Allow the breath to remain slow and unlaboured so you can detect the appropriate depth of sensation that you feel you can tolerate.

2. HOLD FOR TIME - Hold each pose for a while so as to fully nourish the meridian lines. We want to coax the Qi into particular pathways, helping to engorge the respective organs with refined energy. This takes time and patience.

3. RESOLVE TO REMAIN STILL - Support the nourishment of your joints by becoming still and muscularly soft, allowing gravity to have you. Whenever we move, Qi flows more predominantly in the muscles and fasciae. During a yin practice, we intend to pool Qi in the bones and joints, which requires that we diminish movement and settle into a pose.
