Not much remains of the Wurarga railway siding, built in in 1896 to service the railway line extension from Mullewa and Yalgoo, part of the Mullewa - Meekatharra railway line. Today, there is a concrete platform and what appears to be the remains of a livestock loading ramp and some ruins of buildings. Approximately 40 kms west of Yalgoo, Wurarga Siding was home to the Wurarga Hotel with William Mooney as the licencee. There were 3 homes made of limestone and corrugated iron for the railway gangers and a goods shed on the north side of the railway line. There was also a stone station house for the resident station manager. Believe it or not there was a cricket oval, south-west of the hotel!
In addition to Wurarga Siding being used for the transport of goods and livestock the siding was also used as a terminus for two coach services. Gascards, the largest in the region and based in Cue and owned by Jules Gascard. The other was the Yalgoo Livery and Bait Stables managed by Mr H. S. McKenzie.
Wurarga Siding was unmanned by 1923, the Wurarga Hotel was closed down and delicensed in 1969 and by 1974 the railway line was closed. The actual town of Wurarga came to an end in the late 1970's. This was due to the closure of the railway line and finally the rerouting of the main road.
Wurarga is on the traditional lands of the Wadjari - Yamatji people in the Mid West Region of Western Australia.
