Mooka Homestead, is on the Ex Mooka Pastoral Lease which is now part of the nearby Kennedy Range National Park. In 2008 a proposal to turn the homestead into tourist accommodation hasn't come to fruition 16 years later. Research indicates there was a caretaker in residence however we saw no evidence of this. Mooka Homestead is just South of the Gascoyne River and not to far from the township of Gascoyne Junction.
Mooka means Running Water in the language of the Inggarda People and was the name they gave to Mooka Springs which was simply referred to as Mooka.
Some Mooka history:- Thomas Binning took up a section of Binthalya lease as part of his holdings. George Hutton took over the holding in 1924 and acquired more land, together these two holdings became Mooka pastoral lease. The Huttons ran the station from the original Mooka homestead which was 13 kms from the main road. Back then mail and goods were collected from the main road by horse and cart by the older Hutton children. Later on a general store was built near the present day Mooka Homestead and was referred to as the "Half Way Store" part owned by Mrs Davies. Mooka homestead was relocated to its current position in 1956 to be near the main road.
Mooka was purchase by WA's CALM (Dept of Conservation and Land Management) in 2000. A mere 5000 goats were removed from Mooka pastoral lease in 2003 and a total of 13,574 goats were removed between 2001 and 2005.
Mooka Homestead is on the traditional lands of the Inggarda people in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia.
