Mooloogool & Diamond Well Homesteads - Only one is still standing, NorthEast of Meekatharra, WA.

Описание: We never know what awaits us when we check out old and abandoned homesteads. Sometimes we're greeted with a homestead that looks like the residents have just ducked out to the shop, other times, they have been or should be demolished. Mooloogool was closer to "should be demolished", While no major structures remain of Diamond Well. Mooloogool lease was taken up in 1918 and it's thought Diamond Well was also taken up in the same year. 81 years later Mooloogool was purchased by CALM (Conservation and Land Management) in 1999.

While researching Mooloogool the names of Mary Leverman and Bernard Smith turned up. They married on the 11th September 1923 in Greenough and it's reported they lived on Mooloogool Station where they raised their family of four. Research didn't indicate if they were workers on the stations or owned, managed or ran the station.

While at Mooloogool we were pleasantly surprised to see a Barn Owl roosting during daylight in a tree near the Homestead. Generally they roost in tree hollows, caves, rock crevices etc so it was a treat for us to spot this one. They mainly feed on small mammals and insects although with colonisation their favourite food became the European house mouse. They hunt in flight and have exceptional hearing meaning they can hunt in complete darkness.

Diamond Well was nearby so we decided to check it out however when we got there all that remained was the pad, generator shed and the remains of a water tank. Research suggested Diamond Well homestead was still standing in 2008.

Mooloogool is on the traditional lands of the Yamatji / Wadjarri People in the Murchison (Mid West) Region of Western Australia.
