The abandoned Mount James Homestead, is approx. 70kms south of the impressive Burringurrah (Mt Augustus) { • Mount Augustus (Burringurrah), Largest Mon... } and is only a short detour off the Landor - Mt Augustus Road. In 1999, 45,000 ha (100,000 acres) of Mount James Pastoral lease was excised for the Burringurrah Community.
There was only one roofless building (the homestead?) standing although there were several concrete slabs joining it. It's puzzling what happened to the other buildings, as the slabs are so clean, no rubble or roofing timbers, plumbing etc laying around. It's also interesting to note the walls appear to be built out of reasonably modern cement bricks while you can see in the video, the fireplace in one room looks as if it's hardly ever been use.
Horse races were held annually on nearby Landor Station, approx. 35kms to the south of Mount James Station. In 1933 the new manager of Landor didn't want the races held there so they were moved to Mt James Station where a new track had been laid out. We couldn't see any sign of the former race track.
Research about Mount James Homestead and pastoral lease proved difficult and turned up little to no information.
Mt James Homestead is on the traditional lands of the Wajarri People in the Gascoyne Region of Western Australia.
