Training for a marathon in midlife doesn’t always go to plan.
In Episode 3 of my Osaka Marathon training series, things take an unexpected turn.
I’m loosely following the Nike Run Club marathon training plan, but early on I’m still running my usual mileage while waiting for the plan to eventually overtake my regular routine. At this stage, there shouldn’t be any reason for my body to force me to stop… but that’s not how Week 3 played out.
This week included a speed workout known as a fartlek run—a Swedish word meaning “speedplay”—and while those sessions are definitely pushing me beyond my normal comfort zone, the real challenge came on long run day.
After dropping my wife at LAX, I planned an easy 7–8 mile run along the beach path. Halfway through, I developed sharp pain under the arch of my foot that steadily worsened. What I initially brushed off as normal training fatigue turned out to be plantar fasciitis—a common but frustrating runner’s injury.
