Welcome back to Full Later Life — the channel all about staying fit, healthy, and active as we move through midlife and beyond.
In this video, I’m closing out Week 1 of my Osaka Marathon training with a long run on the trails. While the plan called for a shorter distance, I decided to stick with what I normally do on the weekends and head out for a trail run on the Gabrielino Trail, complete with water crossings, technical terrain, and a waterfall turnaround point.
Trail running is very different from road running — especially when you’re training for a road marathon. In this run, I talk about:
Why trail runs are a great addition to marathon training
Adjusting pace for technical terrain, rocks, and climbs
Mixing running and hiking when the trail demands it
Carrying your own nutrition and hydration on the trails
Staying safe when conditions change underfoot
Why variety matters more than PRs as we get older
This run ended up being just over 7 miles, which put me ahead of the marathon plan for now — but the miles will start building soon. Trail running helps strengthen different muscles, improves balance, and adds variety that keeps training fun and sustainable, especially in later life.
As always, the run wraps up the best way possible: coffee with friends ☕️
💬 Question for you:
How do you mix up your training when you’re preparing for a race or goal? Trails, hills, cross-training, or something else? Drop a comment below — your ideas might inspire someone else to try something new.
