During the Russian civil war, many armed revolutionary groups sprang up to try to implement their preferred ideology in Russia. One of these was the Revolutionary insurrection army, also known as the black army lead by Nestor Makhno, an anarchist group fighting to abolish all forms of government and create a stateless commune in Ukraine. They fought against both the Bolshevik red army and the anti-bolshevik white army, refusing to ally with either one for more than a short amount of time. Makhno is most well known for being the inventor of the Tachanka, the predecessor to modern day technicals, a horse drawn cart with a machine gun on the back. They proved to be surprisingly effective against the infantry of the red and white armies.
