The Roman empire at it's peak stretched across all of Europe and parts of Africa as well as parts of the middle east. Until in the 4th century when it became divided into what became known as the western roman empire and the Byzantine empire. The Byzantines held up for many years but the Western roman Empire lost territory at an astonishing rate to germanic barbarian tribes that had rebelled. This continued until Rome itself fell and the Roman civilisation as we know it ceased to be.
