Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charles H. Keating IV was a U.S. Navy SEAL who was killed in action on May 3, 2016, while fighting ISIS during Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq.
Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, he attended Arcadia High School, where he was a standout athlete in cross country, track, and swimming. The son of Olympic swimmer Charles Keating III, Charlie later earned a running scholarship to Indiana University. After two years, he left college to enlist in the United States Navy in 2007 and became a Navy SEAL in 2008 after completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training (BUD/S).
Keating deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan and earned the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for valor. On May 3, 2016, he was part of a quick-reaction force sent to assist U.S. advisers under attack by Islamic State fighters near Irbil, Iraq. During the firefight, he was mortally wounded while defending the position and protecting fellow service members.
Shortly before deploying, Charlie quietly married his fiancée Brooke Clark. They had planned to celebrate their wedding with family and friends later that year.
For his extraordinary heroism, Keating was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, promoted to Chief Petty Officer, and also received the Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon.
His legacy lives on through the C4 Foundation, created by his family to support Navy SEAL families, wounded veterans, and the Naval Special Warfare community.
