Navy Hospital Corpsman Third Class Maxton “Max” William Soviak, 22, of Berlin Heights, Ohio, was killed in action on August 26, 2021, during the suicide bombing at Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan while supporting the evacuation of civilians during the final days of the war.

Max enlisted in the United States Navy on September 26, 2017, shortly after graduating from Edison High School in Milan, Ohio. While in high school he was active in football and wrestling, was a Boy Scouts Life Scout, and competed on the junior rifle team. He was especially proud of being part of a state championship wrestling team and a state playoff Final Four football team. Max also attended EHOVE Career Center where he studied Electrical Technology before joining the Navy.

After completing boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Hospital Corpsman “A” School in San Antonio, Texas. He was later stationed in Guam where he worked as a medic assisting with vaccinations and surgical care. During his time there he embraced adventure and personal growth, enjoying cliff diving, scuba diving, CrossFit, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu, and he even helped start a youth wrestling program.

Max later achieved his goal of serving “greenside” with the Marines after completing Field Medical Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (Ghost Company) where he proudly served as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman — known among Marines as a “Devil Doc.”

While deployed to Jordan, his battalion was called to assist with the humanitarian evacuation mission in Kabul as the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.

On August 26, 2021, Max and 12 other U.S. service members were killed in the ISIS-K suicide bombing at Abbey Gate. The attack also took the lives of more than 170 Afghan civilians.

Max died doing what he believed in — helping others and serving his country, regardless of who they were or where they were born.

For his service and sacrifice, HM3 Soviak was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon, and the Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist designation.

Born January 22, 1999, Max grew up in a large and loving family of 13 children, where his parents also fostered many kids over the years. Those close to him say he carried those lessons with him throughout life and even hoped to become a foster parent himself one day.

To honor his life and continue his legacy of service, his family created the Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak Memorial Foundation. The foundation works to support veterans and their families by connecting them with resources and services tailored to their unique needs, ensuring that Max’s spirit of helping others lives on.

Max may have only lived 22 years, but he lived life to the MAX.
