In which Dr. Corey Olsen begins his next Mythgard Academy course on The Lost Road, with Part 1, Chapters 1-2 of the fifth volume of The History of Middle-earth by JRR Tolkien.
After a brief review of The History of Middle-earth thus far, Professor Olsen introduced the matter of Númenor, which had its origin in Tolkien's agreement with C.S. Lewis that Tolkien would write a tale of time travel and Lewis one of space travel, and in his recurring dream of a great wave drowning the land. Four key elements are present from the beginning: the fall of Númenor; the seduction of the Numenoreans by Thû (Sauron); the sundering of Valinor from Arda by the gods; the alliance formed against Thû (Sauron) between survivors of Numenor and the elves of Middle-earth.
