In which Dr. Corey Olsen begins his next Mythgard Academy course on The Lost Road, with Part 1, Chapter 3, section i-ii of the fifth volume of The History of Middle-earth by JRR Tolkien.
This week we picked up with the second version of the downfall of Numenor, first ruled by Elrond (not Elros). The inclusion of Elrond makes the story of Numenor the natural successor to the story of the Elder Days, as Men are the successors of Elves. The emergence of Elendil and Valandil establishes a link forward in time to Alboin and Oswin in The Lost Road. The identification of eftsith with time travel and the impossibility of return.
