Building ARA Plug-ins with JUCE - Attila Szarvas and Stefan Gretscher - ADC22

Audio Random Access (ARA) gives plug-in developers a new API through which they can exchange information about the current project with the DAW. This includes being able to access audio source data and playback region time information in its entirety, without being restricted to the current playback buffer.

This talk will focus on accessing these features through the JUCE-provided ARA API wrapper. We will guide you through enabling ARA in JUCE, building the AudioPluginHost with ARA hosting enabled, and configuring a JUCE plug-in project to provide access to ARA-related capabilities. Using a simple plug-in project, we will demonstrate some of the unique features that ARA can provide.

Attila Szarvas

I studied electrical engineering and got drawn into signal processing and software development while working on active noise cancelling research topics. I've been working ever since as a programmer in various fields, but the most fun I had was doing audio plugin development in the three years before joining JUCE in June 2021.

Stefan Gretscher

Stefan's career in audio programming has led him from hand-crafting bare-bones assembler on the DSP-based platforms of the late 90s to working on today's Melodyne with its roughly 250k lines of just the audio model and processing C++ code. Along that path, his focus shifted from signal processing to software architecture, programming languages and framework design.

With this background, Stefan is leading the development of the ARA Audio Random Access API at Celemony.
