The PRC02 SMI to Lagoa do Fogo, or the lake of fire, is our favorite hike in Sao Miguel. Even if you are not into hiking, this short path can be considered one of the Sao Miguel highlights. The hike starts from a side road next to Agua do Alto and leads up to this beautiful crater lake. Located within the caldeira of this thousands of years old volcano, this beautiful lake and nature preserve is one of our highlights on the island.
The path leads steadily upwards in the beginning, but you will reach a levada soon, from which point the slope becomes very gentle. The beauty of the path is simply incredible.
Around the lagoa do fogo, you can find many hiking routes (https://www.alltrails.com/parks/portu..., but the one we did is https://www.komoot.com/tour/8446762.
You have the option to walk it as a circular trail, https://www.alltrails.com/trail/portu..., but we decided to rather enjoy the levada a second time.
