The condor has long been the symbol of indigenous identity for the Andean highlander. Respected for its strength and power, the condor is a bird whose flight takes on mystical dimensions. Soaring high above amidst mountain currents, its presence reminds us of the struggle for independence and autonomy. This melody was compiled in the middle of this century by Daniel Robles, a Peruvian ethnomusicologist whose love for his land led him into the Andes of southern and central Peru. The piece is divided into three distinct musical forms. The first is "yaravi" with its slow and haunting sadness. Second is the "pasacalle" which, picking up the pace, leads us to end the song with Peru's most ubiquitous rhythm: "huayno".
