In the region of Imbabura, high above in the mountains of Ecuador, musicians and townspeople gather each year during the festival of San Juan. Originally a way of commemorating the summer solstice, the event was closely linked to harvesting and planting seasons. With the arrival of the Spanish, Catholicism became suffused with native beliefs while taking on new forms of expression. After time, the celebration became known as San Juan, or Saint John, in honor of one of Ecuador’s patron saints. A song form accompanied by lively dancing, this “san juanito” speaks of the musician’s favorite guitar.
