Is your sales team still preoccupied with the events of the last couple of months, or have they started to focus on the future? I believe that a future-focused mindset creates a pathway for a successful COVID recovery plan. You know, in a crisis situation we often go through a phase of focusing on the past. Who messed up, why did this happen, who’s going to fix it? In the world of sales, they’re non-productive questions. A more productive mindset is future-focused asking, what might we do to get the results that we want and achieve our desired goal.
So how might you start to shift your team from lamenting about the past, and focusing on the future? First, run from questions that start with ‘Who or why’. Who messed up? Why did this happen? Non-productive. They entice you to look at what’s gone wrong from the past vs. focusing on a recovery plan for the future. They are destructive.
Next, start asking future-focused questions. I personally love the word ‘what’. What might you do to get the results you’re looking forward to? What might you do to implement the plan? What might be some ideas for us to consider as we’re implementing?
