One of the most helpful tidbits of advice that I received from my mentor as a young sales manager is this: Keep your salespeople focused. They have got to be focused on the goal, focused on results at all times. And this task is increasingly difficult as we work through this crisis; there are so many distractors for all of us. Yet, the fact remains, we have got to keep our salespeople focused on the results in order to thrive in the new normal.
So practically how is a results mindset nurtured? Yes, there’s a regular update on performance against target, and daily sales behaviors. But what about that pile of reports or that onslaught of data your salesperson gets? Every report and data should be focused on the results you need them to achieve. And what about that comp plan? If it’s too confusing salespeople won’t know what they’re supposed to do when they go to go to work every day. It has to be crystal clear.
So, what might you do to strengthen the results mindset of your salespeople? Step into their shoes. Look at the world from their perspective. What’s distractive? What needs to be tossed? What needs to be streamlined? What might you do to enhance their ability to focus on the results that both of you need to achieve?
