Winter isn't just for resting—it’s the perfect time to build "black gold" in your garden beds! While your plants are dormant, the soil biology is still hard at work.
Winter is the perfect time to add amendments: green materials (food waste) and brown materials (leaves, twigs, etc) to your growing space. These green and brown materials will breakdown and feed your soil microbes all winter long. The green materials will add nitrogen to the soil while the brown materials will introduce carbon.
Additionally, these amendments protects your soil from erosion and helps maintain a stable temperature for beneficial organisms.
