To smash your Sled Push and PB your next hyrox race, follow these four tips which have helped me shave over 1 and half minutes of my sled push station time.
TIP #1: The Forearm Hook Technique "Forget what you think you know about pushing the sled:
Use your forearms as hooks around the sled poles
Position your body weight up and OVER the center front of the sled
This is dramatically more efficient and effective than the locking your arms out overhead
It also keeps your chest open for optimal breathing
Letting you drive the sled forward with your body weight through glutes and quads"
"But technique alone isn't enough..."
TIP #2: The Strategic Break Method "This is where most athletes sabotage themselves:
Going all-out will destroy your race
I learned this the hard way in Birmingham
For Open category: Take micro-breaks at the end of each 12.5m length
For Pro category: Add mid-length breaks during lengths 2, 3, and 4
This allows me to transition to running fast again within 15 seconds of finishing"
"This pacing strategy alone saved me 45 seconds, but here's where we get serious..."
TIP #3: Progressive Overload Training "The secret to dominating the sled push is training BEYOND race conditions:
Build a progressive training program that exceeds both distance and weight
My game-changing workout for the Open category: • 20m at 80kg • 20m at 120kg • 30m at 160kg • 30m at 180kg
For Pro category: Start 20kg heavier with same increased weight intervals"
Training heavy, gives you a big head start. But what if you don't have access to sleds?"
TIP #4: No-Sled Training Alternatives "Don't let equipment limitations hold you back:
For example Technogym treadmills have a sled push training mode
Use the 'boot camp' setting alternating between sled and run modes
60 seconds of each trains your legs to transition effectively
This simulates comprised running race conditions perfectly"
