“Sūtra” literally means thread. A thread holds flowers together in a garland. Without the thread, the flowers fall apart. Similarly, a sūtra holds a stream of thought together. It connects ideas and ensures continuity.
A thread also allows us to loop back to where we began. If we cannot return to the starting point, each chapter will seem to move in a different direction, suggesting confusion in the author. But a true master never contradicts himself.
Though Veda Vyasa classified the Vedas, composed the Mahabharata, the Puranas, and the Pancharatra texts, his underlying message remained consistent throughout.
Therefore, we should not read verses as isolated statements. Each verse must be understood from the overall vision of the author. Otherwise, we may be misled by partial interpretation.
This principle especially applies to the Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali. Each sūtra must be read in connection with the whole.
The First Requirement: Discipline
Patañjali begins with a foundational requirement:
अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥ 1.1 ॥
Atha yoga-anuśāsanam
“Now, the discipline of yoga.”
